[Class 31 (ii)] Keyboard machines for perforating paper tapes for telegraphy and distant type setting are provided with a flat stationary magazine of angularly displaceable disc elements 1, which are selected in groups during the step-by-step travel of the main selector carriage S to the right and store the code signal before perforation, and after hand correction, if necessary, are scanned automatically on the idle or return stroke of the carriage S by a magazine of feeler arms o controlling the transmitting contacts P or a perforating mechanism. The discs 1 are frictionally held between plates 2 by springs 8, Fig. 3, and the magazine of discs is interchangeable with another. In operation, depression of a key lowers one or more bars 19 acting on cranks 18 to depress selector rods 15 and deflect corresponding discs 1. When the carriage S is at the end of its travel, the releasing lever couples up the screwed shaft 28 to an intermittent drive which moves the feeler carriage A to the right by a step-by-step motion, and a cam 42 is turned to release the cranks 40. When a feeler arm o finds a gap caused by a deflected disc 1, its crank 32 turns under the pull of a spring 43, bar 38, and detent 36, and the crank 40 and contact P are actuated. Before the next step of the carriage A, tension is applied to the bar 44, by a cam, not shown, and an arm 46 tends to slide the frame 49 and bar 48 to the left to reset the discs 1. The carriage A may be driven by the return motion of the carriage S. When the carriage A has finished its travel, the drive is reversed and the carriage returns to the left to its initial position and is locked until released as described above.
