Abstract
424,433. Chamfering gear teeth &c. SHOTTON, W. E., 68, Raglan Road, Smeth. wick, Staffordshire. Sept. 21, 1933, No. 26054. [Class 83 (iii)] In a machine for chamfering teeth 26 of a gear wheel 22 or like, or for backing off milling - cuttings &c., the work is placed on an indexable table 23 and both sides of the teeth chamfered by a pair of tools 8 reciprocated on inclined guides in a saddle 2 which is itself reciprocated on vertical guides 3 to feed the tools to the required depth of cut at a gradually decreasing speed and then to withdraw the tools while the work is indexed. The tools are mounted on slides 4 driven from a main shaft 9 through bevel gearing 10, shaft 11, bevel gearing 13, intergeared crank shafts 14, 19, and connecting rods 16, 21. The throws of the cranks are arranged so that the tools operate alternately without interfering with each other. The height of the saddle 2 is adjustable by a screw 28 rotatably connected to the saddle at 29 and working in a nut in crosshead 32. A micrometer gauge on the block 34 indicates the adjustment of the saddle which is clamped in position by a lever 36. The main shaft is also connected through gearing 41, 44, and worm gearing 45 to a cam shaft 46. A clutch 47 controlled by a lever 48 is provided in this train and is operated by a plunger rod 51 with an external knob 52. A connecting-rod 39 pivoted at 38 to cross-head 32 is pivoted at 53 to a lever 54 having a stationary pivot 55 and rocked by a cam 57 on the shaft 46 to impart the down feed movement to the saddle. A secondary lever 58 engaged by a second cam 60 carries a screw 61 which is adjusted to engage the lever 54 and take up all play in the cam mechanism and to permit the movement of the saddle to be effected positively in both directions. The cam 57 is so shaped that the saddle is moved first quickly to bring the tools up to the work and then progressively more slowly to reduce the feed as the cut proceeds. The work table is supported on a stem 62 carrying an index wheel 63 and pick wheel 64. The locking-bolt 65 coacting with the index wheel is operated from a cam 69 on the main cam shaft through a lever 66. After withdrawal of the bolt, indexing is effected by a pawl 74 operated by a lever 72 and cam 70 after which the locking bolt is re-engaged. When all the teeth on the blank have been chamfered, a projection 76 on the index wheel co-operates with a lug 77 on the rod 51 and disengages the clutch 47 thus stopping the cam shaft and the feed reciprocation of the saddle. After clamping a fresh piece of work the clutch 47 is re-engaged by hand through the knob 52. The saddle 24 may be traversed by a hand wheel up to a stop on the machine frame to determine the correct position of the work relative to the tools.
