Abstract

Oils are extracted from herring and other fish of the clupeidae family by dehydrating the fish under vacuum at below 70 DEG C. to a water content of less than 20 per cent calculated on the press cake and then expressing the oil in hydraulic presses, of the type used for expressing oil from vegetable materials, at 50--250 kg. per sq. cm. The fish may be ground to pulp before treatment. Herring to which fish liver grax or other fat-containing fish refuse may be added is reduced to a homogeneous pulp in disintegrating and grinding mills and dried at not over 55 DEG C. preferably to a water-content of 10--15 per cent, the material on leaving the drying apparatus at 45--55 DEG C. being subjected to the pressure treatment. U.S.A. Specification 1,821,639 is referred to.ALSO:Oils and a human or animal food which will keep are produced by dehydrating herring or other fish of the clupeidae family under vacuum at below 70 DEG C. to a water content of less than 20 per cent calculated on the pressed food, and then expressing the oil in hydraulic presses, of the type used for expressing oil from vegetable materials, at 50-250 kg. per sq. cm., the product obtained containing less than 6 per cent of fat. The fish may be ground to pulp or cut into boneless pieces before treatment. Herring, to which fish liver grax or other fat-containing fish refuse may be added, is reduced to a homogeneous pulp in disintegrating and grinding mills and dried at not over 55 DEG C. preferably to a water content of 10-15 per cent, the material on leaving the drying apparatus at 45-55 DEG C. being subjected to the pressure treatment, giving food cakes of suitable thickness. U.S.A. Specification 1,821,639 is referred to.ALSO:An animal food which will keep is produced by dehydrating herring or other fish of the clupeidae family under vacuum at below 70 DEG C. to a water content of less than 20 per cent calculated on the pressed food, and then expressing the oil in hydraulic presses, of the type used for expressing oil from vegetable materials, at 50-250 kg. per sq. cm., the product obtained containing less than 6 per cent of fat.
