Abstract

Yarns, threads, filaments, &c. are coated with water-resistant wax or wax-like materials in such a manner that a rough surface is produced. This may be effected by rapid cooling of the wax from a molten condition or rapid precipitation from solution by evaporation of a solvent. The waxed yarns &c. so obtained are specially suitable for covering wire with an insulating coating. Suitable waxes are amorphous paraffin wax from petroleum or ozokerite, crystalline paraffin wax, beeswax, carnauba wax, materials such as cetyl alcohol or the esters or ethers of higher fatty alcohols. To reduce combustibility substances such as beta chlor naphthalene triphenyl phosphate or tricresyl phosphate may be added. The material is applied to the travelling yarn by devices such as wicks, discs <PICT:0423065/IV/1> or rollers and the yarns are wound, with or without twist, on to suitable packages. In order to accelerate cooling of the yarn it may be contacted with a cold metal surface, a wick supplying cold liquid or a blast of cold gas. In a device for applying wax shown in Fig. 1, filaments passing from a spinning chamber 3 to a winding device 5 pass over a driven roller 6 which dips into a bath 9 of wax kept molten by a steam coil 11. In another arrangement, a yarn or filament is passed over a disc rotating about an axis parallel to the direction of movement of the yarn and dipping into heated wax, and thence over a wick dipping into a cooling liquid or a liquid such as amyl acetate which is a solvent for wax at elevated temperature though not at room temperature.
