Abstract
422,847. Grinding glass and like joints. TRIPLEX SAFETY GLASS CO., Ltd., 1, Albemarle Street, Piccadilly, London, and SCORAH, L. V. D., Triplex Works, Eccleshall Road, King's Norton, Birmingham. July 15, 1933, No. 20093. [Class 60] Conical joints of glass or the like, such as the joints between bottle necks and stoppers, are produced by first pre-forming the cone and socket members by the method described in Specification 422,846 to substantially the correct form, and then grinding them to standard taper by means of an abrasive applied by accurately tapered tools, the parts being thus interchangeable. The tools, in the form of hollow socket members and corresponding tapered mandrels, may be formed of cast iron, copper, or aluminium, and either the tool or the work, or both, may be rotated. Joints in materials such as fused silica, earthenware, porcelain, guttapercha, and mouldable resins may be formed in this manner, the abrasive in the case of the harder materials being carborundum, and for the softer materials bath brick or emery employed with a tool of a soft character such as aluminium.
