Abstract
422,746. Opening preserve cans &c. WATSON, F., Aldwych House, Aldwych, London.-(Aktiebolaget Transitoria; 37, Birger Jarlsgatan, Stockholm) March 6, 1934, No. 7111. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 10, 1934.] [Class 66] Preserve cans &c. having a wall formed with a portion to be torn out, defined by a weakened line, are opened by means of two members acting as levers, one of the members being permanently secured to the tearing portion inside the weakened line, the other member being connected or connectible with it and adapted to bear on the part of the wall outside the line. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the first mentioned or tearing member 32 is secured by a rivet 34 to the portion 28 inside the weakening line 26 and has a raised outer end 38 formed with lateral projections 40. The second member or key 42, which normally lies flat on the tin as shown, ends in a pair of flattened parts 46 formed with inward projections which are disposed beneath the end 38. Rupture of the wall is effected by raising the key by means of the grip 44, the end 48 bearing on the outer part of the wall causing the tearing member to rise as shown in Fig. 3 ; an upward pull on the key completes the opening. In the construction shown in Fig. 7, the key 42 comprises a loop member having the ends journalled in a sleeve 56 formed by a doubled strip riveted to the tearing portion; when turned outwardly for the opening operation the key finds a bearing on the rim 24 of the can. In a modified construction a looped key member similarly mounted has an end adapted to bear on the can wall after the manner of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 11 shows a form in which the two members are formed integral, a depression 70 defining a weakened zone about which bending or hinging takes place when the key 66 is raised ; in a further integral construction a rod or wire doubled to afford the tearing member is bent back on itself to form bifurcated grip portions. Fig. 17 shows a form having a tearing member 90 with a turned-up end 92 similar to that in Figs. 1 and 3, the key consisting of a U-shaped wire, the bearing part 100 of which is formed with a tongue 102 bearing on the seamed end of the can.
