Abstract

422,009. Gun mountings; sights. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., Cranford Lane, Hayes, WILLIAMS, D. L. H., Hillside, Swakeley's Road, Ickenham, and MORTON, J. T., 46, Lees Road, Hillingdon, all in Middlesex. Oct. 28, 1933, No. 30015. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] A gun mounting, particularly for use in aircraft, comprises electrically-operated means for directing the gun the movements of which are transmitted to the sights by mechanicallyoperated means, so that the gun can be controlled from any of a series of sights at different positions on the aircraft. As shown, the gun 11 is mounted on a horizontal axis 12 between arms 13 projecting from a turntable 14 arranged under a vertical casing 15. A bracket 17, adjustable with the gun about the axis 12, has a toothed quadrant meshing with a worm 18 in the spindle of an electric motor 19. The table 14 is similarly geared to a second motor 22, a switch being provided adjacent each of the sights for controlling the extent and direction of motion of the motors for adjustment of the gun about the two axes. The horizontal displacement of the gun is transmitted to the sights 24 by a bevel-gear on the table 14 and rod 27, gears 28, 29, shaft 30, worm 31, and hollow shafts 33 on the upper ends 34 of which the sights 24 are pivoted by brackets 52. For transmitting the vertical displacements of the gun, the bracket 17 is fitted with a cam 41 engaging a roller 42 at the lower end of a rod 43 which is urged upwardly by a spring 44. A cross-pin 45 on the rod 43, guided in slots 46 of the casing 15, transmits the displacements of the rod 43 to the sights by linkage 47, 47<b>, rod 48, cams 49 and push-rods 50 adjustable in the hollow shafts 33. The upper ends of the rods 50 are formed with ribs 51 meshing with toothed sectors on the sight-brackets 52. Geared countershaft-operated devices are fitted for transmitting the movements between the sights at the different positions on the machine. Fig. 7 shows the electrical circuit and a controlling switch for the pairs of opposed fieldwindings 72, 73 and 75, 76 of the motors 19, 22 respectively, and a trigger-switch 84 for energizing a solenoid 85 controlling the firing- mechanism. The motor switch comprises arms 78, 79 respectively movable about horizontal and vertical axes to co-operate with rheostats 80, 81 and 82, 83 in the field-winding circuits of the motors. The various sight-station switches may be connected through a selectorswitch so that only one may be operated at a time.
