Abstract

421,869. Stopping trains. DEY, P. C., A/13, Road No. 2, Water Tower, Patna, India. Feb. 26, 1934, No. 6139. [Class 105] [See also Groups XXXII and XXXI] A pilot trolley adapted to run in the front of of an engine or train for the purpose of avoiding collisions and derailments is connected with the engine by one or more automatic switches which under certain conditions open an electric circuit including one or more electromagnets associated with the engine controls, brakes, alarms, &c., whereby the train is brought to rest. The trolley is preferably self-driven and provided with means for keeping its speed equal to that of the train. As shown the separators are in the form of lazytongs H to which both sufficient rigidity and resilience are given by means of friction joints and springs, either a single lazytongs being employed or two or more sections connected by intermediate supporting trolleys. The pilot trolley T is propelled by a motor A controlled by a regulator G, which comprises a rack-andpinion mechanism actuated by relative displacement between the trolley and the separator and rotating an arm j, Fig. 4, moving over resistances r. On the trolley are mounted buffers B associated with switches b, b, a guard C associated with switches c, c, and a frame D associated with switches d, d, the object of these elements being to ensure, when an obstacle of any character is encountered, the breaking of a circuit X that includes the switches and leads to the engine. Additional switches e, e are brought into operation if the trolley meets loose rails, switches g, g if the trolley overturns or is derailed, and inertia switches i, i by any sudden stoppage. When the circuit X is opened an electromagnet M, Fig. 9 on the locomotive is de-energized, a weight W falls and the regulator handle L is moved to cut off the supply of steam to the cylinders ; simultaneously a second electromagnet effects an application of the brakes, and another electromagnet causes a visible or audible danger signal to be given.
