Abstract

421,812. Mercantile forms, labels, index cards, and like sheets. BONNAIRE, C., 19, Boscombe Road, Shepherd's Bush, London. May 24, 1933, No. 15059. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 10, 1934.] [Classes 16, 146 (i), and 146 (ii)] [See also Groups XVIII and XIX] A number of connected blank or printed mercantile forms, letter-cards, envelopes, labels, or the like are made in the form of a paper sheet or web which is folded to expose corresponding portions of the forms in a steplike arrangement for the receiving of inscriptions, and has perforated or weakened lines for detaching the separate forms. By the arrangement, a number of forms can be printed in a typewriter by passing the folded web sheet through the machine. One manner in which the web can be folded is shown in Fig. 4, and in one example, a form starts at b<1> and extends to b<19>, so that the next identical form would start at b<21>, the part b<19>, b<21> of the web thus being waste. Interconnected envelope-blanks, of which two are shown by the thick lines in Fig. 3, extend from b<3> to b<14> and b<14> to b<22>, the web being folded along the lines b<9>, b<14> and b<22> as shown in Fig. 4. The web is perforated at b<14> and b<22> for detaching the envelopes, and the first one, for example, is completed by folding the blank along the line b<9>, folding in and securing the side flaps B<1>, B<2> by gumming, and finally folding over the top flap along the line b<4>. Windows may be provided in the envelopes. By omitting the flaps B<1>, B<2> a series of blanks suitable for use as letter-cards is obtained. The web may be so formed that the letter-card blanks have tongues on the closing flap adapted to engage pockets formed by folding over and partially gumming down a strip on the opposite edge of the blank. Another form of sheet is shown in Fig. 5, prior to folding along lines b<2> b<3>, b<4>, and is perforated along the folding lines. In a further arrangement, the sheet prior to folding has two opposite edges cut away in stepped arrangement. Where the forms in the web are separated by a slit extending partially across the web, the web has perforations extending longitudinally thereon between the ends of the slits for detaching the forms. Two sets of forms may be superposed with the overlapping parts perpendicular to one another. A folded set of forms may consist of different kinds of forms or envelopes connected together. Devices may be provided for preventing the opening of the folds. Carbonised areas are provided on the various forms for duplicating entries, and a summary sheet placed on either or both sides of the set can thus receive copies of the entries. In the case of a connected series of labels, each label may be formed by securing together a number of consecutive folds of the web or sheet so as to strengthen it. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, file covers, maps, index cards, flat-folded boxes, advertising signs, calendars, paper-bags, filter papers, and cut patterns may be made in folded-strip form. Also, a suitably-shaped sheet may be folded along parallel and perpendicular lines to expose margins of parts of the sheet. Where the folded sheet or web comprises envelope blanks, there may be a detachable flap on each blank for receiving written matter. Various additional methods of folding are described, in one of which exposed parts of individual sheets are arranged obliquely to the sheets. A web which is given a series of stepped folds in one direction and another series at right angles to the first, has two sets of stepped margins and is particularly useful for maps, some of the folds being partly severed to enable sections of the map to be inspected without opening the map fully. A backing sheet may have transverse slots to receive the folds of a transversely-folded stepped web, to hold the web in folded formation. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
