Abstract

420,196. Pipe-cleaning devices. WATFORD ENGINEERING WORKS, Ltd., and PARAMOR, J., Lower High Street, Watford, Hertfordshire, and SUCKLING, H., 8, Park Avenue, West Thurrock, Essex. Nov. 8, 1933, No. 31152. [Class 99 (ii)] [See also Groups VIII and XXIX] A washing-device for strainers, felts, or the like in paper mills or other industries of the type wherein a delivery pipe 16 has a plurality of outlets 20 for jets of liquid spaced along its length, a cleaning device movable in the pipe serves for cleaning the outlet, and a longitudinal baffle 24 is so arranged parallel with said pipe that the jets impinge thereon and are converted into a curtain of liquid, is characterised in that the cleaning device is rotatable in the delivery pipe. The delivery pipe 16 is connected by means of union members 18 with slots 19, with a parallel feed pipe 10, closed at each end and supplied by a central branch pipe 14. End plates 22 fixed to the underside of the pipe 16 carry the baffle plate 24. The cleaning device in the pipe 16 comprises a twisted strip 30 connected at one end to a spindle 31 extending through a stuffing-box 28 at one end of the pipe. Rotation of the screw conveyer 30 feeds any sediment in the water, which may e.g. be the backwater of a papermaking machine, along to one end of the pipe where an outlet 34 controlled by a valve 35 permits removal of the sediment so that the jets 20 do not become blocked. The conveyer 30 is of coarse pitch which may be one turn or less per foot length, e.g. in a 7 foot conveyer the pitch may be about 9in. The spindle 31 and conveyer 30 may be rotated by a crank handle which may be loose on the spindle 31, and carry a pawl 38 to coact with a ratchet wheel 39 fast on the spindle 31 so that rotation of the handle in one direction rotates the conveyer but not in the other direction. In a modification where liquid is to be delivered to a rotary member e.g. a cylindrical screen the spindle 31 carries a loose star wheel 46 with a pawl which coacts with a ratchet wheel fast on the spindle 31, and the wheel 46 is rotated intermittently by a number of dogs mounted on the cylindrical screen. Or the cleaning device may be mounted inside the screen 52, internal dogs 60 rotating the star wheel 46, and the water being sprayed against the upper part of the internal periphery of the screen, liquid which falls back being caught by a tray 54 and led away by a pipe 56 passing through a trunnion 58 of the screen. In another method of driving the conveyer 30 a star wheel 46 is fast on the spindle 31 and carries a ratchet wheel with which a pawl carried by a fixed part such as the pipe 16 coacts to prevent rotation of the conveyer 30 in the wrong direction. The baffle 24 may be carried in slots in the end plates 22 and by brackets 40 slotted at 41 and carried at spaced intervals on the pipe 16, so that it may be removed and replaced in the reversed position either side for side or end for end. The conveyer 30 may have perforations along its axis to ensure a free flow of liquid to the jets 20. The cleaning device may have a multiple thread and may be driven at the end remote from the outlet 34. Also the feed pipe may be supplied from either end, and the conveyer may be rotated continuously as by a pulley and belt.
