Abstract
420,131. Typewriters. WANDERERWERKE VORM. WINKLHOFER & JAENICKE AKT. - GES., Sch÷nau, near Chemnitz, Germany. May 29, 1934, No. 16008. Convention date, May 30, 1933. [Class 100 (iv)] Letter - spacing mechanism.-In variablespacing mechanism, particularly for machines writing oriental languages, transmission members between the key-levers and a stop for the loose escapement-dog are adapted to be readily connected to any desired key-levers, and one of the transmission members is arranged to effect abnormal spacing for all type-cases, whilst the other transmission members are arranged to effect abnormal spacing for one type-case only. In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 10, a shift-frame 2 supports a platen-carriage 6, and letter-spacing mechanism comprising an escapement wheel 10 co-operating with fast and loose dogs 12, 14 on a rocker 11. A stop 15 for arresting the loose dog in singlespacing or double-spacing position is pivoted at 49 to the rocker and is normally held in contact with a stop-pin 53 by means of a spring 47. A hooked lever 18, mounted on the pivot 49, engages a pin 48 on the stop and is connected by a link 19 to a bell-crank 20 which is pivoted at 24 to the shift-frame. The key-levers 25<a> for effecting double-spacing in the normal and shift positions of the platen-carriage are each provided with an attached finger 30b for operating a transmission member consisting of a bar 32 carried by rocking arms 34 on the framework, an extension 35 of one of the arms being connected by a link 36 to the bell-crank 20. On depression of any of the key-levers 25a, the platen-carriage being in either normal or shift position, the lever 18 rocks the stop 15 into contact with a lug 55, and the loose dog can perform a double-spacing movement. The key-levers 25<c> for effecting single spacing and double spacing in the normal and shift positions respectively, are each provided with an attached finger 31 which is connected to a link 30<c> having a cranked end entering a hole 41 in a transmission member 40 consisting of a bar carried by rocking arms 38 on the framework. A pin 42 on one of the rocking arms is arranged above the bell-crank 20 but is ineffective when the platen-carriage is in normal position. When, however, the platen-carriage is in shift position, depression of any key-lever 25<c> causes the pin to rock the bell-crank, and the stop 15 is displaced to permit of double spacing. The key-levers 25d for effecting double spacing and single spacing in the normal and shift positions respectively, are each provided with an attached finger 31 which is connected to a link 30d having a cranked end entering a hole 45 in a transmission member 44 consisting of a bar carried by rocking arms 43 on the framework. When the platen-carriage is in normal position, a finger 46 on one of the rocking arms engages the bell-crank 20, and double spacing is effected on depression of any of the key-levers 25<d>. When the platen-carriage is shifted, the finger fails to engage the bell-crank, and single spacing is effected. The keyboard can be readily adapted to different arrangements of the keyletters by providing selected key-levers with the attachments 30b or 31. If more than two widths of spacing are required, more transmission members are employed and the stop 15 is arranged to have more than two selectable positions. The shifting platen-carriage may be replaced by a shifting type-segment.
