Abstract

The surface of moulded rubber sheets or articles is roughened by sprinkling it while in the unhardened state with particles of pulverulent, granular or like material which are chemically inert with respect to the rubber and are removed from the finished product to leave a roughened or pitted surface due to the mechanical indenting effect of the particles. The invention is applicable specially to the manufacture of rubber gloves and like articles where a good gripping surface is desirable. In one method of making gloves, a former is dipped into rubber solution and the deposit is sprinkled with crystals of magnesium sulphate which become partly embedded in the film and are subsequently washed off the dried film. Alternatively, a material such as sand may be used, which can be removed from the dried film by washing, rubbing or brushing. Sheets or articles produced by dropping, spreading, or spraying latex or other rubber-like raw material may be similarly treated.
