[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 20, 1934.] [Class 103 (v).] Relates to automatic buffer couplings for railway &c. vehicles of the kind in which two opposed coupler-heads g, Fig. 2, when connected form a rigid link between the draw-gears of the two vehicles. According to the invention the rear portions of the coupler-heads g are formed with preferably spherical rolling sursurfaces i so that together they constitute in effect a rolling body interposed between flat buffer surfaces mounted on the vehicles, the arrangement ensuring that, when the vehicles are displaced relatively to each other vertically or laterally, the forces set up in the coupling are transmitted in a direction parallel to the axis thereof. As shown in Fig. 2, the buffer surfaces h are supported at the forward ends of sleeves c slidable in guides a, and the rolling movement of the coupler-heads g thereon is permitted by ball-and-socket joints between the heads and part-spherical ends p of the draw-bars k, springs d within the sleeves c being compressed during such movement. At their rear ends the rods k are connected to spring buffing and draw-gears t. When the relative lateral or vertical movement is large, the ball joints may be replaced by lenticular joints. In a modification, Fig. 4, the spring buffing and gear is incorporated immediately to the rear of the buffing surfaces h and comprises springs d, u, movable followers or plates q, r, and sliding intermediate and inner sleeves c, l respectively. In a further modification (Fig. 6, not shown), the upper portion of each buffer surface h is bevelled off at a slight inclination to the vertical.
