Abstract

417,054. Wired wireless signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., Connaught House, Aldwych, London.- (Western Electric Co., Inc. ; 195, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.) March 23, 1933, No. 8776. [Class 40 (v).] In a transmission system having a plurality of conductors arranged in a plurality of separate cables or shielded compartments of the same cable and repeaters therefor, the intervals between the repeaters varying with different individual conductors, in order to minimize cross-talk the conductors either of the repeatered line or of adjacent lines are transposed into a separate cable or section in the neighbourhood of a repeater. In a system employing two cables I, II, Fig. 1, the carrier-frequency conductors e, f respectively are repeatered at a station B the voice-frequency lines of cable I being transposed to cable II at this point and vice versa. In order that conductor pairs a, b entering cable I and pairs c, d entering cable II at A may leave the same cable at C further transpositions are effected as shown at points A<1> and C<1>, this particular arrangement ensuring the least interference with traffic should one of the cables be damaged at any point, the pairs a and c forming a four wire system with terminal a<1> and pairs band d forming a similar system with terminal at b<1>. The points A<1> and C<1> should be as far apart as other conditions will allow. In a system embodying a single cable with internal shield, the carrier-frequency lines e, f, Fig. 3, and voice-frequency pairs a, b, c, d are arranged so that the inputs from the repeaters at A and C are directed into the outer compartment and each repeater receives its input from an inner compartment. The repeaters at B in the carrier-frequency lines are so arranged that their inputs come from the inner compartment and the high level output circuit is in the outer compartment. The voice frequency circuits may be confined to a single compartment as shown in dotted lines.
