415,518. Making bearings. BROWN, G. D., Halstead, Wellington Road, Nantwich, and MATTHEWS, R. K., Moorsfield House, Audlem, both in Cheshire. April 6, 1933, Nos. 10329 and 23469. [Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii), and 83 (iii).] Boring - machines ; boring - bars ; jigs.- Apparatus for cutting connecting-rod or other bearings comprises a main casting or bed 1 provided with a flat seating-surface for the bearing and bored vertically at 5 to receive the boring bar, the big-end bearing being accurately held concentric with the bore by means of vice jaws and the little end of the rod being located on an adjustable mandrel. The bed has an extension 2 which may be bolted to a bench 3. The upper surface of the bed carries a plate 7 having a slotted arm 9 along which is mounted a mandrel 11 for the little end of the connecting- rod. The mandrel comprises a pair of cones 13, 14 adjustable along a screwed stem 12 so that the rod may be set parallel with the plate 7. A bracket 20 of the bed has a bearing 21 for a right-and-left-hand threaded spindle 22, one portion of which operates the jaw 24 of the work-holding vice while the other portion engages a yoke 27 connected with the other jaw 23. The vice jaws are operated by a handle 33. To facilitate adjustment of the work each vice jaw is provided with an adapter such as 35, Fig. 5, which may be adjustably connected to the jaw, Fig. 21, so that the big end may be aligned with the bore 5. For cutting bearing shells, the adapters may be of V-formation as shown in Fig. 6 to engage the circular periphery of the shell. The boring-bar, operated by a handle 66, Fig. 15, comprises an upper portion 56 connected by a coarse-pitch screw 58 with a lower portion 55 which has a fine pitched feed screw thread. The cutter 57 may be set by means of a calipering device or by a micrometer and is locked by a bar 59 formed with a wedge-shaped notch and drawn upwardly by tightening a nut 62. The screwed part 55 of the boring bar may coact with a screw thread in the casting 1, but preferably the feed nut consists of a detachable collar 70, which is secured to the tubular extension 71 by retaining screws 73 and clamping screw 74. The collar is lined with soft metal in which the screw 55 cuts a thread to feed the boring bar downwardly. On completion of the operation the boring bar proper is unscrewed from the feed screw 55 which may be then quickly removed by detaching the collar 70. The collar 70 may also be employed when facing bearing cheeks, the bolt 74 being released and a second clamping bolt 75 tightened until it locks the collar to the boring bar, whereupon the bar may be rotated without changing its axial position, the screws 73 moving in a channel 72. In some cases, for positioning the work, a centring plate 78, Fig. 18, bored at 79 to receive a pin 80 on the plate 7 and having a boss 81 engaging in the guide 5 may be employed. A vertical wall 82 of this plate has one surface containing the axis of the guide 5 and has slots adapted to receive the connecting rod bolts when the top half of the connecting rod is placed against the wall 82. For reamering bearings the boring bar may be replaced by a reamer. Casting composite articles ; cores.-For casting white metal into bearing shells the adapters for the vice jaws may comprise yoke-like members 44, Fig. 8, having topped arms 45 which receive bolts for adjusting the work. A casting plate 46, Fig. 10, to facilitate this operation, comprises a boss 47 fitting into the bore 5 and a dividing wall 48 against which the bearing halves are pressed by the adjusting bolts. Cores 50, 51, Fig. 14, mounted on a handle are placed on either side of the wall 48 and may be preheated before pouring the metal.
