[Class 106 (iv).] An instrument, such as a speed-indicator on a motor vehicle, is so arranged that the actuating mechanism lies close outside one edge of a window while a pointer moves over a transparent dial lying within the area of the window. The pointer may move between two semicircular or similar discs and may be illuminated by edge lighting. The mechanism 14, Figs. 1 and 2, may be arranged below the edge of the windscreen 12 of a motor vehicle, while the pointer 23 moves between transparent discs 16, 21, sealed at their edges by parts 18, 22, one of the discs forming a graduated dial. Other arrangements are shown at A, B and C in Fig. 7. Two pointers, for instance car speed and engine revolution per minute, may be arranged coaxially or otherwise. The mechanism 14 may be arranged in a casing adapted to accommodate other instruments, several arrangements being shown. Alternative constructions for joining the edges of the discs are shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11. The dial markings 104 in the disc 100, Fig. 10, may be illuminated by edge light from the bulb 105. In the lighting arrangement, Fig. 4, a bulb 35 illuminates the discs 16, 21 above the top edge of the dashboard, and other instruments arranged below.
