Abstract

413,980. Projectile fuzes. SCHNEIDER ET CIE, 42, Rue d'Anjou, Paris. Jan. 29, 1934, No. 3012. Convention date, Dec. 23, 1933. Addition to 411,043. [Class 9 (i).] Relates to the dash-pot time fuze claimed in the parent Specification and consists in the provision of : (1) means for determining or facilitating rotation of the piston of the dash-pot to reduce friction, and (2) a long needle in a small-bore tube instead of the conical screw valve for regulating the flow of air through the piston. As shown in Fig. 3, a tooth o is formed on the tube h which sets back within the central part c<1> of the piston to compress its driving spring g and a curved slot p is formed in the central guiding stem q of the fuze body a ; moreover the driving spring g is attached at the bottom to the fuze body and at the top to the tube h, so that the spring is subjected to torsion as well as compression when the tube h sets back. In a modification of this, the tooth o is formed on the lip of the larger part c' of the piston, and the curved slot p in the part a<7> of the fuze body. In another modification, a ball race or the like is inserted between the rear end of the spring g and the seat a<3> of the fuze body to leave the piston free to rotate. As shown in Fig. 7, the flow of air through the piston c<4> is controlled by means of a small tube t, attached to the piston by means of a screw plug u, in conjunction with a long needle i inserted in said tube, the needle being attached to a thimble v which is detachably screwed to the plug u and has a lateral vent hole v'. A number of needles may be provided, one of which is selected according to the regulation desired. This regulating device is balanced by a thimble w, which is attached to the opposite side of the piston and serves also to receive a screw rod x, x<1> for locking the piston to the fuze body a until the fuze is to be used, when the rod is withdrawn by hand.
