[Class 83 (iv).] A device for drawing and holding together metal sheets, especially sheets to be riveted through lapped joints, comprises a body, and a stem passing through holes in the sheets and comprising two or more members one or more of which may be drawn forcibly inwards to the body, the end of the stem remote from the body being capable of expansion or contraction by operation from the body end of one or more of the stem members. A partially split sleeve 3, Fig. 1, having a collar 5 and an enlarged head 6 is pressed downwards by a light spring 8 and is allowed to contract to be passed through a hole in the work when pressure is applied to a disc 11. On releasing the disc, a strong spring 12 raises the mandrel so that its head 9 expands the split sleeve and then draws the mandrel and sleeve upward together to clamp the lower metal sheet against the upper one. The disc and spring may be replaced by a nut engaging the upper surface of the casing and screwed on a threaded portion of the mandrel. A split sleeve 15, Fig. 3, is carried by a tubular member 15b, which is in screw threaded engagement with the mandrel supporting member 16. On rotation of the mandrel by a bar 21 the sleeve 15 is raised and is first expanded and then clamps the workpieces together. A modification of this form is described in which the screw-thread mechanism is replaced by a spring. In a further modification a portion of the mandrel and of the sleeve are elliptical the sleeve being expanded upon rotation of the mandrel and thereafter raised by spring action. The stem may comprise members 42, 43, Fig. 9, having eccentric projections 42a, 43a, the members 42, 43 being rotatable to bring the projections to the inner or outer position shown in Fig. 10. Cam, lever, or like means may be provided to compress the spring where employed.
