413,316. Printing - machines. RAPPEPORT, P., 3, Klagbaumstrasse, Vienna, and SCHNELLPRESSENFABRIK KOENIG & BAUER AKT.-GES. MODLING, M÷dling, near Vienna. Jan. 11, 1933, No. 1000. [Class 100 (ii).] Cylinder machines.-A printing-press of the kind in which a printing-forme is passed between two rollers 1, 17 which exert pressure on the top and bottom surfaces of the forme is constructed so that the cylinder 1 is a stop cylinder which carries the sheet into contact with the forme and ceases to rotate after the impression has been printed, the forme 21, which is resiliently connected to the reciprocating bed 16, being driven during the printing operation solely by the friction between it and the rollers 1, 17. The impression cylinder 1 is freely mounted on a shaft 2 formed with gear wheels 3, 4 for reciprocating racks 23, 24 to which the bed 16 is secured. The wheels 3, 4 are fitted with spring-pressed coupling bolts 5-6 which engage recesses 32 on the cylinder upon rotation of the wheels in one direction. The bolts 5 are held in coupled position by bolts 35, Fig. 4, which are actuated by a fixed stop 36 and a sliding member 38 with a projection 37 which engages the stop 36 to release the bolt 35 when the cylinder is to be stopped. The sliding member 38 has sufficient play to allow for the thickness of the members 36, 37 and the sliding motion of the bolt 35. The bolts 5, 35 and the member 38 are controlled by springs. The shaft 2 is oscillated by a gear-segment 8 which is oscillated about a pivot 18 by a rotating crank 10 on a shaft 11 driven by worm gearing 12, 13, a pivotal block 9 on the crank 10 engaging a radial slot in the segment 8. A quick return is given to the racks 23, 24 by this mechanism, the drive for which may be varied. The cylinder 1 is held in its stationary position by a spring-pressed pawl 20, which engages a stop 19 on the cylinder and is formed with a brake to prevent the pawl from vibrating. The pawl is released by a cam on the cylinder engaging a roller on the end of the pawl. Gripper mechanism.-The sheet-grippers 42, Fig. 5, are operated by a cam 44, connected to one of the gear wheels 3, 4 and formed with a radial face 41 against which engages the roller 45 on the arm 47 fitted to the shaft 46 of the gripper. During the operative rotation of the cylinder 1 the face 41 keeps the gripper in contact with the sheet, and should the bolt 5 fail to transmit motion to the cylinder 1, motion would be transmitted to the cylinder by the action of the face 41 on the roller 45.
