Abstract
Acid tars, formed in the refining of benzole and other hydrocarbons with acid, are passed into water maintained at boiling point during admission of the tar, whereby acid hydrocarbons and resin are recovered therefrom. A suitable treating tank is provided at one side with a channel or partition the lower end of which opens below the surface of the boiling water contained in the tank. The water is maintained boiling by a steam heating coil or by a pipe admitting live steam. In operation, sulphuric acid sludge is poured in a thin stream down the channel and mixes with from \ba1/2\be to 1 volume of boiling water, whereby the sludge is rapidly diluted and the formation of charred bodies or sulphur dioxide is prevented. Hydrocarbons distilled off are condensed by water cooled tubes mounted at the top of the tank below which is mounted a tray to collect the condensate. Alternatively a condenser may be mounted on the lid of the tank. The layer of resins floating on the solution of diluted acid is drawn off and treated for 2 to 3 hours with steam, or may be removed and treated with aqueous ammonia or alkali and worked up into hard resin. The acid layer containing up to 75 per cent by weight of sulphuric acid and free from organic matter, is drawn off at the bottom of the tank and is concentrated.ALSO:Acid tars, formed in the refining of benzole and other hydrocarbons with acid, are passed into water maintained at the boiling point during admission of the tar. The layer of resin floating on the diluted acid is drawn off and treated with steam or with aqueous ammonia or alkali, and worked up into a hard resin. Apparatus is described.
