Abstract

Butyl alcohol and acetone are prepared by fermenting sugary materials, such as beet or cane molasses or sugar syrups with a culture of an anaerobic bacillus named clostridium saccharobutyl-acetonicum, which is found in soils or on materials grown in or near the soil, such as potatoes. The organism is isolated by placing small pieces of potato and a little diastatic malt in a sterile flask and heating to 60-5 DEG C. for about 30-60 minutes, the temperature is then raised to 80-5 DEG C. for about 10 minutes, cooled and incubated at 36 DEG C. preferably under reduced oxygen tension. After fermentation has started a transfer is made to a cane molasses medium, and a pure culture obtained by repeated heat-shocking and sub-culturing. The mash to be fermented may contain 2-6 per cent of sugary material besides an organic nutrient material and the pH value of the mash is adjusted to a value between 4 and 5.
