[Class 18.] A collapsable crate of the type used, e.g., in the transport of vegetables comprises side and end slats 20, 22, Fig. 2, folding about corner battens 21, each corner batten being arranged to rock on an edge during the folding or unfolding of the crate, such edges being, if desired, flattened or rounded. In the form shown in Fig. 2 staples or wires 23 are driven through the slats 22 and the rocking edges of the battens, folding being permitted by the flexing of the staples &c. In the form shown in Fig. 5 nails 29 passing through metal strips 30 are employed ; these metal strips 30 may also be used with the staples or wires shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 6 V-shaped staples 23 lie in saw-cuts 31 and embrace the slats 22. Soft metal angle strips or flexible strips may be used instead of wire or nails. In the form shown in Fig. 9, two battens 21 are provided at each corner so that the crate will fold in either direction. When hard nails are used without the metal strips 30 the heads will press recesses in the wood and so permit folding, or grooves for this purpose may be formed. The base and cover, which may be interchangeable, are formed of crossed slats, in the spaces between which projecting ends of vertical slats 26 of the ends 22 engage ; they are secured by wires held at the middle of each end between the centre longitudinal slat and the end transverse slats, each wire being carried across the top or bottom and half-way down or up the side where it is secured by twisting round a nail &c. on the corner batten. When the crate is collapsed, these wires lie along the central slat of the cover or bottom. In Fig. 10 the securing means for the cover and bottom consists of wire loops 33 secured between the slats 24, 25 and bent over the slats 22 where they may be nailed. Alternatively these loops 33 may be carried by the folding part of the structure.
