Abstract

408,450. Glass manufacture. DICHTER, J., 8, Hauptstrasse, Sch÷neberg, Berlin. April 11, 1933, No. 10852. Convention date, April 27, 1932. [Class 56.] Relates to the manufacture of glass vessels from tubing by a machine of the kind in which a glass tube is heated and is then blown in a mould, the tube being continuously rotated during the heating and moulding operations. According to the present invention, the rotation of the tube is stopped during the moulding operation in order that vessels which have square or screwed necks, or are not circular in shape, may be made on the machine. The machine comprises a number of chucks 23 which are journalled in bearings on an horizontal disc 104 and are closed by the pressure of springs. The disc 104 is secured to a shaft 103 which is journalled in a stationary vertical column 102, and is rotated step-by-step by a driven shaft 119 and a Geneva mechanism. The chucks are continuously rotated in their bearings by a gear wheel 111, driven by the shaft 119, which is connected to each chuck by intermediate wheels 109, 110 and a toothed coupling 124, 124<1>. The wheel 110 is movable axially in its shaft by means of a lever 127. In use, a glass tube is inserted in a chuck 23 by any suitable means, and is carried past a succession of heating burners 145 so that the lower end of the tube, which has been closed previously, is softened. In the moulding position, the heated portion of the tube is enclosed in the mould 147, a blowhead 138 is lowered on to the head of the chuck, and the tube is blown to shape by air supplied through the blowhead. At the same time, the coupling 124, 124<1> is opened by the trip lever 128 which is operated by a cam 130 and causes the lever 127 to move the wheel 110, so that the rotation of the chuck and the glass tube is stopped. After the blowing is completed, the mould 147 opens, and the tube with its moulded end is carried to a successive station for cooling or fire-polishing, the rotation of the tube being resumed as soon as it moves away from the moulding-station. A fixed cam may be used, instead of the trip lever 128, to operate the lever 127. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also a device for feeding glass tubes to the machine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
