Abstract

408,371. Electric trolly collectors. BROOKS, R., Ivyhurst, Charlton Drive, Sale, WHYMAN, F., Arncott, Greenway Road, Timperley, both in Cheshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Nov. 14, 1932, No. 32194. [Class 104 (iii).] In a pantograph collector of the kind which descends to the inoperative position by its own weight and is raised by a compressed air motor acting through a spring 5, the pipe 9 supplying the air to the motor 6, 7 is, at a certain point in the travel of the piston, connected to a vessel 11 by a pipe 12 and a rotary valve 15 operated by the piston, so that the rate of travel of the piston is reduced to prevent the collector 1 from being forced violently against the conductor. At the end of the operation the valve connects the vessel 11 to an exhaust port 17 to prepare it for the next operation. In another form the cylinder 6 is connected to the vessel 11 by a port in the cylinder wall which is uncovered when the piston 7 has travelled a certain distance. A quick release valve 10 enables the cylinder to be exhausted rapidly when the pantograph is to be lowered. In another form, the vessel 11 is replaced by a valve which, at the requisite moment, opens the pipe 9 or the cylinder 6 to atmosphere, and closes again after a certain interval.
