Abstract

407,974. Mounting engines. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., 211, Acton Vale, Acton, and SEWELL, C. W., 2, Holly Park Road, Finchley, both in London. Sept. 24, 1932, No. 26566. [Class 122 (iii).] To minimize the transmission of vibrations to a motor vehicle or other frame, an internal-combustion or other engine is supported by one or more pairs of pivoted links so arranged that lines drawn through the pivotal centres of each link of a pair intersect on the longitudinal axis of gyration of the engine. The engine may be supported in such manner at one end only, the other end being supported by a single resilient or resiliently mounted member located about the axis of gyration. Preferably, springs or rubber blocks are provided to limit the amplitude of oscillation, such connections also serving, if desired, to support the engine at or near one end either in addition to or instead of other supporting means. Frictional or other damping devices may be associated with the pivotal connections of the links or the bearing bushes of the pivotal connections may be of rubber or other flexible material. The engine and gearbox unit A, having an inclined longitudinal axis of gyration X, is supported towards the front end by a pair of links C each pivoted at one end to a bracket A<2> on the engine and, at the other end, to a bracket B<1> on a chassis longitudinal B, the arrangement being such that, in the position of rest, lines Y, Y<1> through the centres of the pivots of each link intersect at X<1> on the axis of gyration. The brackets A<2>, B<1> are of U- shaped cross-section, one fitting within the other, the clearance required for oscillation being small. In a modified arrangement, the frame brackets are below the engine brackets, the links C being in compression instead of tension. The rear end of the engine unit may be supported by a single rubber buffer D<1> on a cross frame member D<3>, Fig. 1, or by a U- shaped frame member G, Fig. 5, bearing on rubber buffers G<2> bolted to the longitudinals B, providing in either case for oscillation about the axis of gyration X. In a third form, Fig. 7, the rear mounting comprises links H<2>, the lines Y, Y<1> through which intersect at X<1> on the axis of gyration. At the sides of the unit, buffers E, Fig. 1, are arranged between brackets El, E<2> on the engine and frame respectively to limit the amplitude of oscillation or these buffers may also support the weight at the rear end, the line joining the centres of the buffers passing through the axis of gyration. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 393,339.
