[Class 120 (ii).] In a thread-winding machine of the type wherein thread is wound from a reel on to a holder mounted on a spindle rotated at constant speed, a friction band and drum are associated with the reel, and the growth in diameter of the package being wound effects by positive means in contact with such package a slackening of the friction band upon the friction drum. Thread x passes from a reel 7 mounted on a frame 4 through the eye 8 of a compensating arm 9 to a cheese y. The shaft 10 of the reel carries a friction drum 11 around which passes a band 12 attached to a buckle 13 engaged upon a wire 14, the upper end of which is fixed to a spring 15 connected by a further wire 16 to a strap 17 secured to a peg 18 in a drum 19 on a shaft 20 mounted on a bracket 21 on the rod 6 of the frame 4. The lower end of the band 12 is connected through a spring 22 to a lug 23 on a rod 24 which carries on its lower end a bowl 28 in contact with a cam surface 29 adjustably secured to a bracket 32 on a pivoted member 31. This member carries a thread guide 33 in contact with the surface of the cheese y. Thus increases in the diameter of the cheese y moves the cam surface 29 so that the rod 24 is lowered and the pressure of the band 12 on the friction drum relieved. The drum 19 has a rim 34 with notches in one of which the end 35 of a helical spring 36 which embraces a sleeve 37 on the shaft 20 engages. The other end 38 of the spring rests on a boss 39 on the bracket 21. The compensating arm 9 is looped at its inner end and engages in a boss 40 fixed on the shaft 20. A coiled wire 41 guides the arm 9 in its vertical movements Normally the winding tension holds the arm 9 down but if a thread breaks the spring 36 pulls the arm upwards rotating the shaft 20 and the drum 19 to pull the friction band 12 sharply and apply a braking force to the reel. A bent bracket 42 fixed on the bracket 21 limits the movement of the drum 19 by engaging the peg 18.
