Abstract

407,052. Uniting by fusion. MUREX WELDING PROCESSES, Ltd., and CLARKE, E. J., Forest Road, Walthamstow, London. Sept. 9,1932, No. 25179. [Class 83 (iv).] Alloys or alloy steels containing substantial proportions of alloying elements such as nickel, chromium and manganese are arc welded to alloys or steels of the same or different composition by an electrode or welding rod producing a weld metal of different composition from either of the work parts and consisting of 0.25-2 per cent of titanium, 0.25-5 per cent of tungsten or molybdenum, 6-12 per cent of nickel, 12-22 per cent of chromium, 0.1-0.4 per cent of carbon and 60-80 per cent of iron. Nickelchromium alloys may thus be welded together or to mild or carbon steel, nickel-chromium, heat or corrosion-resisting steels to mild steel, manganese steels to each other or to mild or carbon steel, nickel steel to nickel-chromium steel, and non-magnetic 25 per cent nickel steels to each other. Welding may be effected by a wire of the composition of the weld metal, with or without a flux coating and de-oxidising agent, or by an electrode as described in Specification 320,596, [Class 83 (iv)], in which the nickel-chromium alloy or a nickel-chromium - iron alloy is incorporated in the flux coating and the tungsten and titanium are added thereto in the form of tungsten or ferrotungsten and ferro-titanium or other titanium alloy respectively, the mild steel or iron core being dipped into a slurry of the flux in silicate of soda. or applied by extrusion over a core wound with open spirals of asbestos yarn as described in Specification 127,315, [Class 83 (iv)]. The core may consist of mild steel coated with a mixture of 10 parts of a flux containing equal parts of fluorspar and calcium carbonate, 20 parts of powdered nickel-chromium alloy consisting of one part nickel and 3 parts of chromium, one part of powdered tungsten and 2 parts of powdered ferro-titanium containing 23 per cent of titanium, together with water and sodium silicate. A further welding rod may consist of an alloy of 0.6 per cent of titanium, 0.8 per cent of tungsten, 8 per cent of nickel, 18 per cent of chromium, 0.15 per cent of carbon and 72.45 per cent of iron as described in Specification 371,348, coated with a mixture of equal parts of fluorspar and calcium carbonate made into a paste with water and sodium silicate. Specification 372,678 also is referred to.
