Abstract

406,453. Measuring radiant heat. RADIATION, Ltd., Thimble Mill Lane, Aston, Birmingham, and YATES, H. J., 15, Grosvenor Place, London. Dec. 30, 1932, No. 36873. [Class 97 (iii).] For measuring the thermal radiation from a heating apparatus, such as a gas or electric fire, a radiometer capable of integrating the quantities of heat intercepted by it is combined with means for producing a uniform angular movement between the radiometer and the radiating body. In the form shown the radiometer comprises a synthetic resin or wooden frame b, c, supporting by means of light strips d two sets of massive metal, e.g. copper, blocks a. The latter are of semi-circular cross section and may be ribbed on their outer faces. Packing pieces e separate the blocks a from one another and thermocouples f of iron and constantan, arranged in series, interconnect the two sets of blocks a and are connected by conductors q to an indicating instrument. The radiometer is mounted for angular adjustment in a bracket h, which may be clamped by the cam i on a semi-circular carrier g pivoted about a vertical axis through the radiating body mounted on the platform l and screened at the sides by metal rings n. In use the carrier g is uniformly rotated by hand, electric motor, spring, or weight, so that the radiometer sweeps out a zone, the radiant heat intercepted being conserved by the masses a. By adjusting the position of the radiometer on the carrier g and repeating the latter movement, any desired part of the hemispherical surface swept out by the carrier g may be covered.
