Abstract
406,392. Shock-absorbers; cupping. CARTER SHOCK ABSORBER CO., Ltd., and CARTER, A., Oldbury Road, West Bromwich. Sept. 22, 1932, No. 26331. [Class 83 (iv).] A buffer 1, especially for a cupping press, on compression discharges fluid (oil) from the cylinder 3<a> through a pipe 7 and through overlapping orifices 18 and 24, the effective area of which can be set by hand to give a desired fixed resistance or an increasing or diminishing resistance during depression of the buffer. The oil passes from the orifices 18-24 to an annular space 26 and up through apertures 35 to the top of cylinder 10 where it presses on top of the piston 11 so that the piston 11 is forced down and draws down with it the attached sleeve 23 in which is the slot 24. The slot 24 is long enough to overlap the orifice 18 throughout this downward movement. To diminish the effective orifice and so alter the constant resistance the sleeve 23 is rotated a little to bring the slots 23-18 slightly out of register, rotation being obtained by screwing upper and lower blocks 43, Fig. 6, to one side by nuts 49. This moves cam slot 38 bodily sideways which moves cam roller lever 36 and so turns the shaft 32 carrying the toothed segment which thereby rotates the sleeve. To get a progressively increasing resistance of the buffer the slot 38 is inclined by screwing the lower block 43 to the left so that the sleeve 23 and its orifice 24 is gradually turned during descent of piston 11 to lessen the effective orifice by slight rotation of the shaft 32 and its gearing to the sleeve 23. To get a progressively diminishing resistance the cam slot 38 is inclined by screwing the top block 43 to the left. When the pressure on the buffer is relieved, the spring 12 forces up the piston 10 and the oil above it is forced through opening 35, annular space 26, apertures 20, and chamber 19, then lifting valve 21 and passing through sleeve 17 and pipe 7 to raise the draw ring or buffer 1. A spring 5 supports the weight of the draw ring 1 &c. To set the press tool the plunger 3 is held depressed, but to prevent this causing a pressure on the fluid and so possible leakage the valve 16 is opened to allow the displaced fluid to pass to a tank 14 and on releasing the plunger 3 after tool setting, oil flows back from the tank 14 through the valve 16 to re-close the plunger 3 to normal position, after which the valve 16 is closed. The spring 5 may be eliminated so that the plunger may have to be reset by a hand pump in the tank 1 . Oil leakage past the plunger 3 is led by pipe 55 to the sump 13 and leakage from the piston 11 also drops down into the sump 13 from which it is pumped up through the hole 62, passage 63 and valve 65 to the pressure oil in the space 26. This pump comprises a fixed piston 56 over which the cylinder 25 moves during working of the piston 11. Specification 353,165 is referred to.
