Abstract
Alkali metal hydrides are obtained by reacting hydrogen with a molten alkali metal which is distributed in a finely divided state in an inert liquid hydrocarbon oil. The alkali metals referred to are lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium and calcium. The liquid hydrocarbons which may be employed include tetralin, commercial paraffin oil, commercial lubricating oil and a mixture of higher paraffin hydrocarbons. The reaction is preferably carried out at 230--400 DEG C. and under increased pressure, e.g. 100--500 lbs. per sq. inch. The reaction may be carried out in a pressure vessel clamped in a shaking machine comprising a receptacle carried on the upper end of a hinged vertical arm which is reciprocated. The hydride formed may be periodically or continuously withdrawn from the reaction vessel and separated from the accompanying liquid, the latter being returned to the reaction vessel. The alkali hydrides are obtained in a finely divided state or may be obtained in the form of a paste &c. containing sufficient inert liquid to protect them from the air. The hydrides may be separated from the hydrocarbons by filtration or distillation. Examples are given.
