Abstract
Materials containing or comprising hydrocarbons are heated between 300 DEG --1100 DEG C. in a space confined by a heat resistant metal which is internally coated with a layer of an element of the 4th group of the periodic system having a melting point between 1000-2000 DEG C preferably silicon or titanium, burnt into said metal in pulverulent form. The metal is preferably faced from surface impurities and the element applied in the finest powder is burnt in by heating the metal to 950--1150 DEG C. for several hours. In the cases of a metal tube the tube is filled with the powdered element and heated in the vertical position. Tubular and other apparatus thus treated may be used for the dry distillation of solid fuels, distillation cracking or dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons in liquid or vapour phase or for the polymerisation of hydrocarbons at high temperatures e.g. the conversion of paraffinic or olefinic hydrocarbons into aromatic hydrocarbons. Examples are given of (1) the vapour phase cracking of a middle oil at 700--780 DEG C. and the heat treatment of gaseous hydrocarbons at 650--800 DEG C. Specifications 262,439, [Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &c.], 316,422, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], 365,619, and 383,681, [Group II], are referred to.ALSO:Materials containing or comprising hydrocarbons are heated between 300 DEG --1100 DEG C. in a space confined by a heat-resistant metal which is internally coated with a layer of an element of the 4th group of the periodic system having a melting point between 1000--2000 DEG C., preferably silicon or titanium, burnt into said metal in pulverulent form. The metal is preferably freed from surface impurities, and the element applied in the finest powder is then burnt in by heating the metal to 950--1150 DEG C. for several hours.
