Abstract

403,398. Drying-apparatus. MORTON, J. H., 28, Cambridge Street, St. Georges Road, London. April 12, 1932, No. 10525. [Class 34 (ii).] In apparatus comprising a heating chamber, a chamber containing the material to be dried and a suction chamber, all of said chambers being in substantially the same horizontal plane, means for drawing air in succession through each of the chambers, and openwork screens arranged at the inlet to and outlet from the drying chamber, each of said screens consisting of horizontal slats individually adjustable in the vertical direction, the slats used are of pointed oval or stream-line crosssection. In the form shown, a fan 4 draws air through passages 5, 7, heating chamber 1, drying chamber 2 and exhaust chamber 3, and returns the air to the atmosphere through vertical duct 16. A flap valve 17 allows of recirculation of part of the air. The means which control the vertical distribution of the air stream, i.e. the inlet and outlet screens 10, 11 and any intermediate screens such as 12 consist of vertical rods threaded to receive a number of nuts or platforms on which rest horizontal bars or tubes of stream-line crosssection. The goods to be dried may be arranged on wheeled trucks 13, or on conveyer belts, and may be moved progressively across several units arranged side by side, and of variable air temperature, humidity and velocity. Humidifying means, e.g. a water trough 18, spray 19, and pipes 20 and 21 to allow films of water to trickle over wall 9 and screen 10 may be provided. The steam or electric heater 8 is built up in sections each having individual control of its heating action.
