Abstract

403,242. Presses for separating liquids from solids. ROGGEN, M. VAN, Sprimont, and ROBIN, L., 25a, Avenue Adolphe Buyl, Brussels, both in Belgium. Feb. 13, 1933, No. 4410. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1932. [Class 46.] A press for dehydrating peat and like colloid materials comprises two travelling endless members urged towards one another by resilient means, one of the members being supported transversely of the machine on deformable supports arranged side by side and subjected to the action of resilient devices distributed throughout their length, so that the endless member is deformable in a transverse as well as a longitudinal direction. The travelling members may consist of endless chain members 2, 5, Fig. 1, passing over sets of rollers 4, 7, interconnected so as to form endless chains 4a, 7a. The chain member 5 has a backing 6 and the member 2 is urged towards it by deformable rails or elastic strips 8, crosspieces 9, and springs 10 distributed throughout the length of the rails and adjusted so that the material is compressed progressively. The springs are individually adjustable by means of nuts 11 on rods 12 connected to the backing 6. One of the endless members may be a filter drum 6, Fig. 3, the other consisting of plate chains 2 wound around the drum 6 and pressed towards it by rails 8 acting on roller chains 4a. The drum shaft 6a passes freely through stationary side cheeks bearing upon adjustable stops on a frame, or made integral with the frame. The end walls of the drum have outlet apertures for the water and outside gutters to prevent it from flowing towards the shaft 6a. The water collects in channels on the stationary cheeks and escapes through a drainage outlet. The rails 8 are pressed inwards hydraulically by pistons in cylinders secured by rods to the stationary cheeks and connected by pipes to an accumulator. The diameters of the pistons gradually increase from the inlet of the press towards the outlet. A band 2a of indiarubber or the like passes between the chains 2 and the drum 6. It may be recessed or grooved to prepare the material treated for division into small blocks. The chain member 2 consists of adjacent chains hinged together for transverse tilting, or connected together by pivots fitting loosely in the chain plates. Indiarubber flaps or flanges are provided to prevent the material from escaping from between the travelling members.
