Abstract

A plastic composition of two or more insoluble plastics dispersed one within the other so that the product contains three or more phases successively enveloping one another, all the phases except the last being in a dispersed condition, is produced by dispersing first one of the plastics in another as the continuous phase, then dispersing the mixture obtained in a third plastic, which may be identical with the first, and repeating the operations until the required number of phases is obtained. For p example, a continuous mass of one plastic is formed on mixing rolls or in an internal mixer, such as is commonly used in the rubber industry, and the second plastic is then dispersed into the plastic already on the rolls or in the mixer by gradual addition with continuous milling or mixing. The dispersion so formed is removed from the rolls or mixing machine and is then in similar manner dispersed into a continuous mass of the third plastic by gradual addition and milling or mixing. This sequence of operations may be extended to three or more successive dispersion operations. Examples of three-phase compositions, commencing with the innermost are (a) casein, rubber, casein; (b) urea-formaldehyde, casein, urea-formaldehyde; (c) casein, urea-formaldehyde, casein; (d) urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, casein; (e) vulcanized rape oil (rubber substitute), casein, rubber. In an example, a dispersion of 10 parts of dry casein in 20 parts of rubber is made, the latter also containing vulcanizing ingredients; into the warm mixing is incorporated a small quantity of ammonium hydroxide solution to soften the casein; a second quantity of 40 parts of casein with 15 parts of 10 per cent ammonium hydroxide solution is warmed to 100 DEG C. and is milled to a transparent mass into which the casein in rubber dispersion is milled so that the second casein mass forms the continuous phase; the composition can be subsequently moulded and hardened. Other examples are given. The invention does not include the preparation of multiple phase plastics in which rubber is dispersed in a plastic and the mixture dispersed in rubber, as described in Specification 403,141.
