Abstract

402,671. Setting tubular rivets. BLERIOT-AERONAUTIQUE, 3, Quai du Marechal Callieni, Suresnes, Seine, France. May 11, 1933, Nos. 13750 and 13751. Convention dates, May 11, 1932 and Feb. 1, 1933. [Class 43.] Apparatus for fixing tubular rivets comprises a setting mandrel a adapted to have a number of rivets threaded thereon. The rivets are fed one at a time through clamping-jaws constituting an anvil and are upset by relative axial movement between the rivets and the mandrel. In one form, Fig. 8, the mandrel is clamped to a frame e by vice jaws t, its position being adjustable by a screw t<2>. A carriage d comprising a magazine tube K with guide-plates is slidable on the frame, the carriage having a roller i adapted to be engaged by a cam f operated by a crank h so as to move the carriage and frame relatively against a spring j. A guide-ring x is detachably held by studs on supporting-plates attached to the lower end of the tube K. The ring x has an axial channel x<1> with flared ends and of a diameter slightly larger than that of the rivets to be set. Clamping- jaws r<1>, r<2> forming the anvil are held together by a spring s on the lower end of the tube K. The jaws are held closed by a ring 10 mounted on a rod 11 secured to a slide 13 normally held up by a spring 14. The ring 10 is disengaged and the jaws released by engagement of the cam f with the slide 13. The ring 10 may be held in the disengaged position by a pawl 15 engaging a notch 171 or 17<2> in the slide. The mandrel carries a knob b for upsetting the rivets. On rotation of the cam f, the frame e and mandrel a are moved up relatively to the carriage d and tube K so that the knob b is moved through a rivet hold against the closed mouth of the anvil jaws r<1>, r<2>. The rivets are fed through the jaws by reverse movement of the frame and mandrel under the action of the spring at a certain point in the rotation of the cam. At the same time the slide 13 is moved down by the cam so as to release the jaws and separate them by means of a projection 20 on the rod 11. The rivets are fed by a piston l which moves with the mandrel in the downward direction only. The piston, Fig. 13, is hollow and internally frusto-conical and comprises a movable member l<3> carrying wedging balls a<1> and an external friction ring l<1>. The balls clamp the piston to the mandrel on downward movement thereof, but the piston is held in the tube by the ring l<1> on upward movement. An abutment rod l<2>, sprung at l<4>, is adapted to abut against the ring x and release the piston from the mandrel when the last rivet is ejected. In another form of the apparatus, Fig. 2 (not shown), the mandrel is clamped on the slidable carriage, the magazine tube is fixed on the frame and the anvil comprises one or more jaws pivoted on the frame so that the mandrel and carriage then move relatively to the anvil, tube and frame. The piston comprises a frusto-conical socket having a frusto-conical ring bearing wedging balls. In this form, the top of the mandrel is held by jaws wedged on a socket by an inverted U -shaped member and adapted to be released by a lever allowing a spring to act upon one limb of the U-shaped member. Either form may be provided with an adjustable handle.
