Abstract

401,634. Television. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Hayes, Middlesex, and MANIFOLD, M. BOWMAN-, Heathcot, Worplesdon Station, Surrey. May 26, 1932, No. 26019/33. Divided on 402,134. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v).] Relates to the production of currents of saw-toothed wave-form for scanning in television receivers of the cathoderay-oscillograph type. The currents are controlled and synchronized by means of impulses generated as described in Specification 402,134. These impulses have been transmitted as subcarrier impulses, and after demodulation of the carrier the sub-carrier is applied to terminals 13, 14. The sub-carrier is demodulated by valve V5, and the impulses which control the line scanning-coils 22 are separated by condensers 15, 20 from those which control the frame scanning-coils 18. So long as valve V6 is blocked, condenser 16 charges up slowly through resistance 17, but when a frame scanning-impulse arrives condenser 16 discharges rapidly through the valve. Thus a saw-toothed grid-voltage is applied to valve V7, and the frame scanning-coils 18 carry a saw-toothed current in view of their impedance being low in comparison with that of the valve. In the case of the line scanning- impulses, however, the inductance of the coils 22 cannot be neglected, and a wave-shaping system 26, 27, 28 is employed. The line scanning-impulses pass through valves V1, V2, V3, as described in Specification 402,134. Oscillations are set up in the tuned circuit 3, 4, 21 ; valves V2, V3 are biased so that only the peak of the wave is passed ; and the time constant of the coupling between them is made small, so that sharp short impulses are applied to valve V3. So long as valve V3 is blocked, condensers 26, 27 (of which 27 is larger than 26) charge slowly through the resistances shown, but when an impulse arrives the condensers suddenly discharge through the valve. The output voltage of the last valve is as shown at c, Fig. 2. The back e.m.f. due to the inductance of the coils 22 is of the form b, so that the current in the coils is of the required shape a.
