Abstract

Solid lubricating-grease is made by mixing a lubricating grease with a high molecular polymerization product of hydrocarbons, other than iso-olefines, which are capable of forming a polymeric homologous series, or with products obtained from the polymerized hydrocarbons by hydrogenation or isomerization. Suitable addition products are made by polymerizing styrene, indene, terpenes, cyclohexene, tetrahydronaphthalene, or by hydrogenating the polymerization products of styrene, rubber, diolefines such as butadiene, or cyclo rubber. These polymerization products are mixed with the saponification products of fats or oils with alkalies, alkaline earths, aluminium oxide or lead oxide; or with the saponification products of bleached montan wax mixed with mineral tar or other oils as described in Specification 317,630, [Class 91, Oils &c.]. In examples, an oil obtained by polymerizing cracked paraffin wax with aluminium chloride, is mixed with tallow or bleached montan wax and caustic soda solution, and polymerized hexene, turpentine or rubber is added. The mixture is stirred and heated to drive off the waters. Specifications 379,717 and 399,527 are referred to. According to the first Provisional Specification polymerization products of iso-olefines such as iso-hexene and isobutylene may also be used.
