Abstract

401,001. Cables ; insulators ; resistance materials ; resistance coatings and deposits. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP HOLLANDSCHE DRAADEN KABELFABRIEK, 10, Hamerstraat, Amsterdam. June 4, 1932, No. 15710. Convention date, May 7. [Classes 36 and 37.] Bodies comprising coherent insulating and conducting portions, analogous to those described in Specification 396,891, are made of insulating material which is liquid or plastic in its original state and afterwards sets solid, portions being rendered conducting by mixing powdered graphite or metal with the material. Suitable materials are shellac, cellulose ester lacquers and artificial resins. Paper may be impregnated with artificial resin, portions of which contain powdered graphite. Compositions containing binding agents such as resins, pitch, hydrocarbons and asphalt, fibrous materials, such as asbestos, paper, cellulose and wood meal, and fillers, such as quartz powder, kaolin or fluorspar, can also be employed, the filler being replaced wholly or in part by conducting materials. A leading-in insulator may be made by coating the conductor with graphite on which are laid layers of conducting " bakelite " lacquer and paper impregnated with conducting lacquer, over this is laid paper impregnated with insulating lacquer and the whole solidified in the usual way. Several layers of gradually decreasing conductivity may be applied. The invention is also stated to be applicable to cable insulation. Material according to the invention may be employed in combination with rubber treated as set forth in the above mentioned Specification.
