[Class 83 (iv).] In a machine for making wire fabric the warp wires are continuously fed, the weft wires are intermittently laid in pairs upon the warps and the joints are welded by electrodes travelling at the speed of the warp. The tension on the warp is released during welding. The warp wires are fed under a tension pulley b over a rotatable grooved welding drum with welding heads f past a tension roller g and drag roller d to a reel m. The weft wires may be fed by apparatus described in Specification 393,346, [Group XXIV], in pairs to stationary clips 35, 36 and are transferred by pusher rods 38 actuated by a cam 55 to clips 5 on the drum. The clips are held closed by gravity and release the wefts after welding. Transformers j, mounted on a platform k, are wired to electrodes l on a rocking head r supported on arms s at each end of the drum. The electrodes are lowered to effect welding by a cam-actuated lever 11 connected through a cross-head z with the arms s. The lever 11 is connected to a lever 13 which raises the roller b to release the warp tension during welding. On the downward movement of the head r pins 73 on the arms s engage notches 72 on discs 71 rotating with the drum. The welding head is then moved with the drum until the head is lifted and the pins are released. A cam 29 then swings the head back to its starting position. The parts are driven by appropriate gearing from a shaft 62.
