Abstract

399,524. Boot-making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. and HAZELTON, G., Union Works, Belgrave Road, Leicester. Jan. 7, 1932, No. 465. [Class 17 (i).] Uppers, machines for.-A machine adapted to exert pressure marginally and locally upon otherwise completed shoe uppers, having linings attached thereto, through the medium of opposed pressing members, includes a shoe-upper edge-guiding means which occupies a position which is surrounded, at least partly, by pressing faces upon the members. The machine shown in the Figure contains the same mechanism in the head 10 as described with reference to Fig. 4 of Specification 234,911, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.]. Rotatably mounted on a stem portion 16 which forms the lower part of the head 10, and in which a vertically-reciprocable bar 12 and a vertically-movable rod 14 are guided, is a U-shaped carrier 20 provided with an arm 22. The bar 12 is screwed into a sleeve 24 on the upper end of which is seated a hammer carrier 26 guided on the rod 14. The hammer is in the form of a circular bush 30 seated in the carrier 26, and mounted to allow the bush to slide vertically over it is a work-guiding pin 32 held to the rod 14 by a screw 34 which engages between flanges on the upper end of the pin. An interchangeable circular anvil 40, which has a central recess in its upper face to receive the lower end of the pin 32, is adjustably mounted by a screw-thread connection in the end of the arm 22. The anvil may be locked by a screw 38. The upper face of the anvil is flat around its margin and has a pyramidal annular portion 42. The workpiece is presented to the machine lining side downwards and the lining edge beaten against the sloping face of the portion 42 of the anvil. When the edges of circular or other apertures are to be hammered, the pin 32 is lifted clear cf the anvil until the workpiece is positioned. A strong spring 28 surrounding the sleeve 24 imparts to the hammer a yielding blow. By adjusting the sleeve 24 on the bar 12, or the anvil 40 in the arm 22, the distance between the hammer and anvil can be adapted to suit different thicknesses of work. Specifications 208,217 and 208,498 [both in Class 42 (i), Fabrics, Furnishing &c.], also are referred to.
