Abstract

399,050. Boring and rotary tool bit heads. CONWELL, M. C., 220, Edgewood Road, Milford, Connecticut, U.S.A. Dec. 16, 1932, No. 35733. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1931. [Class 83 (iii).] A boring-head with a transverse tool-slide has means for adjusting the same including a stop ring and an adjusting sleeve, the latter being adapted by its rotation to adjust the tool-slide during rotation of the head and having means connected with the stopping for counteracting the tendency for it to rotate with the head. The rotatable part of the device comprises the shank 11, the continuation of which provides a housing for part of the adjusting mechanism, and the ways 13 for the transverse tool slide S ; two collars 21 and 17, the lower being integral with the shank portion and the upper fitted in position and locked by a ring 18, provide ball races between which are located the adjusting sleeve 25 and stop ring 23 ; these latter are normally held against rotation, the sleeve being screwed over an intermediate sleeve 29 which slides axially on the pin 28 and thereby moves the internally racked rotatably mounted member 30. Axial movement of member 30, obtained by rotating the sleeve 25 relative to the stop ring, transmits motion through gear wheels to a rack on the tool-slide S, small adjustments being made during rotation of the tools by turning a thumb knob 38, the spindle of which terminates in a pinion 36 meshing with teeth on the sleeve 25 ; a graduated slip collar 50 enables the amount of adjustment to be determined. A star wheel may be substituted for the thumb knob engaging a striker on a rotating part of the device thus giving an intermittent feed, or a pinion engaging a rack fixed to the machine frame may be used giving a continuous feed as the device is moved axially. Means for locking the tool-slide comprise inclined bars R<3>, Fig. 2, the lower ends of which bear against the slide, the upper ends engaging the face of a split-ring R opened out and therebv forced in an axial direction by a set screw R<1>. Modifications in the locking arrangements are described together with an auxiliary tool-holder which enables the shank of a tool to be gripped at right-angles to the axis of the device.
