Abstract

Aromatic aldehydes are manufactured by treating an aromatic hydrocarbon or an ether of a mono- or polyhydric phenol, preferably at 60 DEG C. or above, with hydrogen cyanide (or a metal cyanide), hydrogen chloride and an amount of aluminium chloride in excess of one molecule to every two CN groups in the hydrogen cyanide or metal cyanide, and treating the aldimine so obtained with acid. The process may be carried out by mixing the cold dry aromatic hydrocarbon or phenolic ether with dry aluminium chloride, adding hydrogen cyanide or a suitable metal cyanide, e.g. zinc cyanide, heating, passing dry hydrogen chloride and finally adding cold water and excess of hydrochloric acid. Examples describe the preparation, by the action of aluminium chloride, hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen chloride, of: (1) benzaldehyde from benzene; (2) p-tolualdehyde from toluene; (3) 2 : 4-dimethylbenzaldehyde from m-xylene. Other starting materials specified are: mesitylene, anisole, phenetole, diphenyl ether, dialkyl ethers of pyrocatechol, resorcinol or hydroquinone, di- and trialkyl ethers of pyrogallol or phloroglucinol. Specification 19204/97, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.], is referred to.
