[Class 27.] A coin-freed locking mechanism for a safe, in which valuables may be deposited temporarily, comprises a door bolt 1 to engage a socket 1a on the safe, a number of letter bearing discs 2 being mounted coaxially with the bolt and revoluble on fixed bearings 3 which have key-ways 3a to allow radial projections 6a on the bolt to pass. A disc 4 is slidably mounted on a fixed bearing 5 adjacent each disc 2, each disc 4 having a key-way 4a with which a projection 6a engages to prevent rotation of the disc when the bolt is retracted. The discs 4 are moved by forks 7 on a coin-actuated spring-controlled rod 8 and carry pins 9 to engage in holes 10 in the corresponding discs 2 when the rod 8 is moved to the left by its spring 7a. A coin inserted in a slot 11 by engaging ramps 12c, 8a retracts a second bolt 12 and moves the rod 8 to the right to disengage the discs 4 from the discs 2. The bolt 12 is held retracted by a catch 15 and the rod 8 by a spring catch 14 mounted on the bolt 1. The bolt 1, which is normally retracted by a spring, is then shot by a hand-operated member 13 and the discs 2 revolved to a new combination of letters. The rod 8 is released by a pin 14a on the catch 14 engaging a ramp 14b, and when it moves to the left the discs 4 are clutched to the discs 2. Since the projections 6a on the shot bolt are free from the key-ways 4a, the discs 2, 4 can now be rotated to conceal the combination, and by means of the key-ways 4a to lock the bolt in its shot position. A second catch 19 on the bolt 1 coacting with a ramp 19b also locks the rod 8 in its innermost position. To unlock the safe, the discs 2, 4 must first be turned to show the proper combination of letters. The retaining catch 15 of the bolt 12 is released simultaneously with the closing of the safe door. In safes controlled by more than one proprietor, the bolt 1 is retained in unlocked position by a spring catch 18, and a coin must be inserted in a second slot 17 before the bolt can be shot. This coin releases the catch by lifting a lever 18a. The coins inserted in the slots 11, 17 are conveyed to separate receptacles.
