Abstract

396,233. Gravity-separation apparatus. MAcLEAN, D., Government Gold Mining Areas (Modderfontein) Consolidated, Ltd., Brakpan, Transvaal, South Africa. Aug. 29, 1932, No. 24093. [Class 46.] A separator for separating solids from liquids comprises a stationary vessel with a conical bottom sloping upwardly to a central discharge aperture for the deposited particles, and a rotating spiral blade to carry the particles up the sloping bottom to the discharge aperture. The pulp is introduced into the vessel preferably in a tangential direction and the liquid is discharged from a peripheral outlet, the level of which is preferably adjustable. Pulp from a tank 13 is introduced tangentially through an elbow piece 12 into a vessel 1 having a conical bottom 2 lined with concrete 8 sloping upwardly to a central discharge aperture 9. The side wall of the vessel is cut away at 15 to form a peripheral discharge for the liquid, slats 18 being inserted in guides 17 to vary the height of the overflow. Attached to a hub 23a on a shaft 23, which is suspended from ball bearings 33 and driven by worm gear enclosed in an oil chamber 39, are radial arms 24 which carry a spiral blade 20 extending from a point 21 near the wall of the vessel to a point 22 adjacent the central discharge 9. The blade 20 is substantially vertical and the lower edge conforms with and is at a short distance above the conical bottom 2. The inner convolutions are provided with holes 26 to allow liquid to flow towards the periphery of the vessel. To the radial arms 24 is attached an annular plate or shield 51 with a vertical flange 53, which acts as a distributing plate for the pulp. The velocity of the pulp entering the vessel through the elbow piece 12 may be regulated by an angularly adjustable baffleplate 12a, Fig. 4, having side flanges 12b pivoted at 12c, the baffle-plate being adjusted by varying the point of connection of a handle 12e attached to the plate and a quadrant 12g.
