Abstract

395,826. Fire-extinguishing. NEVILLE, J. A., Fern Royd, Dovecote Road, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. April 16, 1932, No. 10969. [Class 47 (ii).] A fire-extinguishing installation for vehicles comprises a collapsable container 15 from which liquid is forced through fixed or flexible pipes 161, 162, 163 and roses 20 or jets to such points as the petrol tank 18, carburetter 19, and driver's seat. The liquid is ejected by compressed air supplied from a reservoir, in the example shown the spare tyre 10 of the vehicle, by pipes 12, 14. The pipe 12 is connected to the Schrader valve 11 by a union 49 which embodies a hollow nipple adapted, when the union is screwed on, to engage and open the valve. The pipes 12, 14 are connected through a valve 13, Fig. 2. This comprises a plunger 29 which is urged upwardly by a spring 31 but is held from movement by the hooked end 32 of a pendulum 33 supported by a ball-joint 34. In the event of a collision, or change of attitude of the vehicle, the pendulum jerks from its position, releasing the plunger. As the latter rises, it raises a lever 28 which in turn moves a plunger 27 to open the valve 26. The valve 26 can also be opened independently of the inertia device by a cable 35 and a handlever 22 arranged at the driver's seat. Preferably, also, automatic means are provided for opening the valve in the event of a rising temperature. The reservoir for extinguishing liquid comprises a rigid casing 37, within which is arranged the collapsable vessel 15, which is supported in the casing by a spring 41, and is connected by a suitable union 17 and non-return valve to the discharge pipe 16. When compressed air is admitted past the valve 13 to the casing 37, it collapses the vessel 15, forcing out its contents by the pipe 16. The vessel may be a flexible bag, or a can of thin sheet brass. Specification 395,994 is referred to.
