Abstract
395,759. Mixing explosives; alloys. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A. Jan. 23, 1932, No. 2136. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1931. [Classes 82 (i) and 86.] Apparatus for mixing blasting-explosives comprises an annular metal bowl, non-metallic revolving wheels adapted to pass through the ingredients, and means for regulating the temperature of the bowl; adjustable scrapers for the edges of the bowl and a rake are provided, and the bowl is made of a non- sparking alloy consisting of 94À8-96 per cent of copper, 3-4 per cent of silicon, and 1-1À5 per cent of manganese. The bowl C is provided with a jacket R through which water is circulated by means of pipes N, P, a draining outlet M being provided, and the wheels B, preferably made of wood covered with hard rubber, are supported by radial arms from a central shaft A. The inner and outer edges are scraped by radially adjustable scrapers D, E, and during the initial stages of mixing gelignites for dissolving nitroglycerine in a gelatinizing agent such as nitrocotton, vertically adjustable rakes F can be lowered to engage the bottom of the bowl. The scrapers and rakes are preferably made of hard rubber.
