[Class 106 (iii).] A revolution-direction indicator combined with a revolution counter and means for ascertaining the speed of revolution comprises a spindle driven by electric motor or otherwise at a speed proportional to the speed of a propeller shaft or other mechanism and having fixed to it mechanism for electrically operating a counting arrangement, for lighting one or other of two lamps according to the direction of rotation and for lighting in succession lamps arranged in a circle. The spindle 1 rotates the brush holder 11 with brush 2 wiping the contacts 3 to light the lamps 20 in succession, rotates the cam 5 to periodically make the contact device 6 to energize the solenoid 7 to actuate a known counting device and frictionally moves the switch-over member 4 one way or the other to light one of the lamps 21, 22 according to the direction of rotation of the spindle 1. The speed can be ascertained by counting the number of lamps 20 lit up in a known period of time. Fig 1 (Comp.) shows a compact arrangement for the mechanism, a terminal 12 to the circular group of lamps, a fixed terminal brush 17 for the member 4 and a terminal brush 19 for the brush 2 being provided. As shown in the drawings the spindle 1 is driven at the same speed as the shaft under investigation, but if the spindle, for example, is driven at one-sixth of the speed, then the cam 5 may have six projections and the contacts may number 36, every sixth contact being connected together. According to the Provisional Specification the lamps 20 may be replaced by audible means. Specification 243,499, [Class 106 (iii), Fares &c.], is referred to.
