Abstract

394,767. Hinges. PRESSED STEEL CO. OF GREAT BRITAIN, Ltd., Cowley, Oxford, and FERNBERG, E. B., 11, The Drive, Edgware, Middlesex. March 11, 1932, No. 7375. [Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] In a door mounted on hinges of the kind comprising two members hinged together and each hinged to an attachment plate, the hinges are so constructed that the angles between the axes of the joints of each hinge (when opened out flat) are different from those of the other hinges, so that the tendency to distortion under the weight of the door is different for each hinge and these tendencies will nullify one another. One of the hinges is shown opened out flat in Fig. 4, and comprises two parts 10 hinged together about.an axis 12, each part 10 being hinged to an attachment plate 9 about an axis 11 ; the three axes intersect in a common point which lies on the axis of rotation of the door, and the axis 12 bisects the angle between the axes 11 or, in the case when the axes 11 coincide, the axis 12 is at right angles to the axes 11. Fig. 1 shows a door mounted on three hinges having different angles between their axes 11, 12. The door and door-post, of pressed sheet steel, are formed with recesses 21 in which the hinges are fixed and which receive the leaves 10 when the door is closed. The maximum opening of the door is affected both by the angle between the axes of any hinge and by the angle which the outer axes of the hinge make with the horizontal when fixed ; the hinges are preferably set at different angles, according to the angle between their axes, so that the load is shared equally between them when the door is open. One or more of the hinges may be mounted with the leaves 10 projecting upwardly. One or more hinges of the ordinary type may be used in conjunction with these hinges. Stops may be provided at one or more of the axes of any of the hinges to limit the extent of opening. In order to impart a rising movement to the door on opening, so that it closes under its own weight, the middle leaves 10 of the hinges are made of different lengths ; the axis 12 does not then pass through the intersection of axes 11, but is parallel to the bisector of the angle between axes 11 or, if axes 11 are coincident, it is perpendicular to them.
