Abstract

394,530. Cow-milkers. WATSON, G. W., Dilston, Corbridge, Northumberland. Oct. 3, 1932, No. 27414. [Class 84.] A portable manually - operated milking machine comprises a frame work 1 carrying a pump 9 connected by tubes 18, 20 to a vacuum cylinder 23, Figs. 1 and 2, of selectively adjustable effective volume, the vacuum cylinder communicating with one or more milk-receiving vessels 27 each of which is provided with an inlet 32 connected by a tube 33 to a set of teat cups 34. The tube 20 is adjustably mounted in a stuffing box 21 on the cover of the cylinder 23, and carries a piston 24 working in the cylinder. The tube 20 passes through the piston, by adjusting the position of which the effective volume of the cylinder may be varied. The milk-receiving vessels 27 are of glass, and communicate through clack valves 36 with glass vessels 39 the lower ends of which depend into a pair of semicylindrical milk cans 41. The pump is operated by a handle 17 and crank 15, and is provided with an air vent 38, an adjustable air inlet valve 47 and a drain cock 48. The teat cups comprise single chamber spun aluminium cups 34 provided with rubber caps 35. Rings 43 are provided on each side of the frame through which the folded tube 33 of one set of teat cups is pushed, to close the tube, when placing the other set of teat cups in position, during which operation the pump is maintained under vacuum. When out of use, the teat cups are supported by swinging arms 49 on the frame. The frame is provided at one end with wheels 2 and at the other with a centrally pivoted bar 3 having feet 4.
