Abstract

<PICT:0394516/III/1> In a process for applying powdered materials to surfaces, a falling curtain of the powdered material is formed and directed by a current of air towards the surface moving in a horizontal plane. In an apparatus for coating sheets of wood veneer with powdered glue, the powder is fed from a container 35 by rotating screw conveyers 44, 45 through adjustable openings 39 into a chamber 10. A belt 11 of wire mesh or similar perforated material enters the bottom of the chamber 10 through an opening 14 and passes over the stationary floor 12 preferably formed of rubber vulcanized to a plate 13. The powdered glue falls into the interstices of the belt 11 and is conveyed to bevelled edge 17 of the floor, surplus powder being removed from the surface of the belt by a rubber-faced roller 18. When the belt passes over the bevelled edge 17 the powder falls in a uniform stream from the perforations assisted by a vibrator roller 20. The falling stream ef powder 26 falls on a rotary roller 25 breaking up the stream, which is then directed downwards by a current of air from an air nozzle 27 towards the sheets of veneer 34 placed on a conveyer. The current of air is generated by a blower and passes through a dampening chamber and between baffles to the nozzle 27.
